A Sustainable Solution for Battery Waste

Active Batteries & Power Camping and 4X4 are committed to creating value through responsible battery recycling. Our industry-leading program provides a simple, hassle-free management solution for all types of recyclable batteries, including Used Lead Acid Batteries (ULAB) and Used Non-Lead Acid Batteries (UNLAB). With a single point of contact, we make battery recycling efficient and environmentally responsible. You can bring your old Automotive batteries to us and we will safely recycle it into new car batteries. Or when we replace your used car battery, rest-assured we will recycle your old battery safely.

Local Collection and Recycling

With a robust local service network, we ensure that used batteries are collected and recycled safely and efficiently. Our professional approach covers every aspect of recycling, including:

  • Collection and identification
  • Proper packaging and documentation
  • Transportation under best practice and legislative guidelines
  • Issuance of material disposal certificates

Used batteries are transported from our store to one of our modern recycling facilities, where they are carefully separated into lead, polypropylene, and sulphuric acid for reuse.

Where to Recycle Your Batteries

  • You can bring your old used car batteries, and other batteries to us.

Responsible Collection and Compliance

ULAB is classified as hazardous waste, meaning there are strict legal obligations regarding its storage and transport. We ensure compliance by requiring:

  • Proper aggregation at collection points
  • Safe packaging according to the Australian Battery Recycling Initiative (ABRI) Packaging Standards
  • Licensed and insured agents who comply with all relevant regulations

Wagga Wagga Recycling Facility: A World-Class Operation

Our state-of-the-art lead recycling facility in Wagga Wagga, New South Wales, is at the forefront of resource recovery.

Using advanced technology, we convert ULAB into valuable materials such as:

  • Lead – used in the production of new lead-acid batteries
  • Polypropylene – transformed into new automotive batteries, flowerpots, and household goods
  • Sodium Sulphate – repurposed for manufacturing detergents and fertilizers

Our facility processes nearly six million used batteries each year and has been certified to both ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 standards, ensuring world-class quality and environmental responsibility.

What Happens to the Recycled Materials?

Through our advanced recycling processes, over 97% of each battery is recovered, with minimal waste disposal. Here’s how we give batteries a second life:

Lead

Recycled lead is formed into ingots and either exported via the Port of Melbourne or delivered domestically across Australia. The majority of this lead is used to manufacture new lead-acid batteries, closing the loop on sustainability.

Polypropylene

The plastic components are processed into small beads, which are then used in a variety of products, including:

  • New automotive batteries
  • Flowerpots and housewares
  • Irrigation pipes and builders’ film
  • Plastic lumber and rubbish bins

Sodium Sulphate

The sulphuric acid from ULAB is converted into high-quality sodium sulphate, which is a key ingredient in many household and industrial products such as detergents and fertilizers.

A Commitment to a Greener Future

At Active Batteries & Power Camping and 4X4, our Recycling is constantly innovating and exploring ways to improve our recycling processes. By responsibly collecting, processing, and repurposing battery waste, we are reducing landfill, conserving valuable resources, and contributing to a cleaner, greener Australia.
